Exomotive's XP-5 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has swapped its Mazda four-cylinder for an LS3 V8 making 525hp. With a full tank of gas, the XP-5 weighs just 1696 pounds. "Siimulations show sub-3 seconds [0-60mph] with a good launch but we have yet to confirm."
I've had plans to build an Exocet for a few years now, and seeing this just makes me want to get it done sooner rather than later (won't actually happen until later, though).
Here are the links to Exomotive's Instagram, where I grabbed these photos from:

These look so undersized

Did somebody glance at a Atom and say "we can build that"?

I'd guess 205 section width

Pretty much. If you aren't familiar with Exocets, they're kit cars based on Miatas. Take the Miata body off like so:
So you're left with this:
Then you bolt on the Exocet tube frame chassis and you have a Miata that weighs 30-40% less than it did. Oh and there's even more room than a normal Miata in the engine bay for swaps.

perhaps just perspective, but this roll hoop looks too low, now sure about the line from hoop down to the front either.

From the original Instagram post: "Driver is 6'4"+ and 280. He does not fit in the Sparco Sprints so he's somewhat on top of the side bolsters. Seats are also mounted a little high with current slider setup."

Okay, that does make more sense now. If it was built ground up that engine placement would look horrible. But since its Miata based and therefore probably cheaper, I get the appeal.

I didn't even mention cost, silly me. The kits start at $6,500. All you need in addition to the kit is a donor Miata, which can be had for $1k-3k, especially since the donor's body condition doesn't matter at all, unless you plan to sell the stripped parts to recoup some money.

Kind of. They said "we can build that cheaper out of a Miata." Basically, you take the body off of the Miata, add this frame, and then you save several hundred pounds while increasing the structural rigidity of the otherwise kind of floppy roadster.

yikes, scary

Yeah, I think this was at their 1st annual EXOFEST Track Weekend. Exomotive was probably letting people take the XP-5 out for a spin.

Damn, thats actually way cheaper than I thought … good deal.

I'll throw an additional "yikes, scary" in there. the company letting folks out in a car they don't fit within the safety equipment of . I've always thought the exocet was cool, but always thought the rollover protection LOOKED inadequate

I have since been enlightened to this. $6.5k is a good price imo.
But I thought you weren't allowed to talk negatively of the Miata here. It almost sounds like you are.

Nope, no negativity. Just saying that the extra chassis bracing is welcome.

Again, I have no idea if this is actually the case; I wasn't at the event and am only extrapolating from what I can see in the photos they posted.
If rollover protection is what you are after, the Exocet "Race" spec is available and has an integrated roll cage in the tube frame , which exceeds SCCA/NASA/FIA/MSA specs for cars up to 2500 pounds.

With that engine swap they should call it the Exocet Missile.

1696 pounds / 525 horsepower = 3.23 pounds/hp.
The McLaren P1 is pushing around 3.5 pounds/hp.
The Toyota GT One Road Car is pushing around 3.31 pounds/hp.

Something about how low they mounted the wing screams inefficiency.

Danny George the Miata drifter is doing something similar but using a tuned LS3 with nitrous i believe. Similar to the engine in his current NB Miata drift car
